Diabetes, is a type of metabolic disease where blood sugar levels remain high over a prolonged period of time. Symptoms include increased urination, thirst and hunger. Diabetes also increases other health risks such as: cardiovascular disease, kidney failure, foot ulcers and circulatory issues and eye damage.
Juvenile diabetes (Type 1 Diabetes) happens when the pancreas is unable to create insulin (a blood sugar balancing hormone) and its cause is unknown. However, the largest percentage of people worldwide with diabetes have adult-onset diabetes (Type 2 Diabetes) which is believed to be caused by prolonged obesity, poor diet and lack of exercise. Smoking also increases risks.
Even though Adult-Onset Diabetes is now a worldwide epidemic with startling rates, there is hope: with a healthy diet and exercise you can greatly reduce the risks of the disease and even better manage it. Research has shown that a high plant based diet with unprocessed foods rich in healthy fats, high fibre and whole proteins is the key to success. Luckily, with a simple swap to superfoods the benefits can be fast, efficient and tasty!
